If you or someone you know owns a Kia or a Hyundai you may be eligible to be a part of the class action lawsuit. The class-action lawsuit over claims that certain models of vehicles are vulnerable to theft “following the automaker’s failure to install basic security measures,” according to a press release from the plaintiff’s attorneys and confirmed by the automakers.

The lack of security measures was exposed on Tik Tok when users demonstrated how easy it was to steal both Kia and Hyundai cars due to a lack of an immobilizer. An immobilizer is a common anti-theft device that prevents most vehicles from being started. Once this defect was exposed on Tik Tok thefts of Kias and Hyundais rose dramatically.

There could be as many as 9 million vehicles that are impacted nationwide. Recently a 200 million dollar settlement was reached. This settlement could see those impacted receive anywhere from $3,375 to $6125. The settlement also offers upgrades to “fix the lack of immobilizer at the heart of the issue, as well as payments to those who are not eligible for [a free software] upgrade,” recently announced by the automakers, attorneys say.
